“Selfie” has been elected by Oxford dictionnaries as “word of the year”. If they are so popular on social media, they aren’t just a narcissitic trait of our society, they are also tools for empowerment and self-confidence boosts.

But even if #selfie is a viral trend, the phenomenon isn’t new. Here is the according to website Openculture, the first ever selfie, attributed to American chemist Robert Cornelius in 1839.
